What Is Physio-Led Training — And Do You Actually Need It?
If you've come across the phrase "physio-led training" and weren't quite sure what it means — or how it's different from regular personal training or physiotherapy — you're not alone. It sits in an interesting space between the two, and it's genuinely one of the most useful things we offer at Fixit for the right people.
Here's a clear breakdown of what it is, who it's for, and when it makes sense.
What physio-led training actually is
Physio-led training is structured exercise coaching where a qualified physiotherapist is directly involved in designing and overseeing your sessions. It's not a gym class. It's not rehabilitation in the traditional sense either. It sits between the two.
The difference from regular personal training is clinical expertise. Your physiotherapist understands how the body moves, how tissues load and recover, how to programme around injury or dysfunction, and how to spot compensatory patterns before they become problems.
The difference from standard physiotherapy is the focus. This isn't treatment — it's performance and conditioning, delivered with clinical awareness baked in.
Who is it for?
In our experience, physio-led training works particularly well for:
People who have completed a course of physiotherapy and want to continue building strength in a supervised, safe environment rather than going it alone
People with a chronic or recurring condition who want to train regularly but need professional oversight to do so safely
People returning to exercise after a period of injury or inactivity who want the confidence of expert guidance as they build back
Active people who train regularly but have persistent niggles, movement limitations, or a history of injury — and who want a physiotherapist's perspective on how they're loading their body
Anyone who has been told to "exercise more" but doesn't know what that means for their specific situation
| Most people don't need less exercise after an injury. They need the right exercise, with the right person in the room.
What does a session look like?
Sessions are tailored entirely to the individual. There's no fixed template because the point is that your programme reflects your body, your history, and your goals.
In practice, you might expect:
A short check-in at the start of each session to understand how your body is feeling that day
A structured strength or conditioning programme designed specifically for you
Real-time coaching on movement quality and technique
Adjustments made on the spot if something doesn't feel right
Progressive increases in load and complexity as you build capacity
Clear communication between your training and any ongoing clinical care
How is this different from SGPT?
Our Small Group Personal Training (SGPT) is a group setting — usually 3–6 people — with a shared programme. It's community-based, great value, and still professionally coached.
Physio-led training is more individual and more clinically focused. If your needs are complex, your history is significant, or you want a programme that responds specifically to your body on any given day — physio-led training is likely the better fit.
